AlphaTcl

Alpha is a powerful and programmable text editor, whose extension language is Tcl. Alpha is originally a Macintosh application, but the variant AlphaTk also runs on Windows, Linux, and other operating systems. Recent versions of Alpha take full advantage of the unix foundations of Mac OSX.

In addition to being a text editor, Alpha can also be used as an interface to other programmes, for example it also works as web browser and email client. Or you can use it as interface to iTunes or the OSX Addressbook, cf. below.

Here are some programmes, packages, and scripts that I have written for Alpha in Tcl. Most of these are already part of the Alpha distribution, but in some cases a next-generation experimental version is provided here.

• Dictionary package. A programme running inside Alpha for looking up word in plain-text dictionaries.
• Embrace. Package defining key binding for easy handling of all sorts of braces and quotes.
• Window-zoom. Package defining key binding for easy handling of window sizes following font sizes.
• tetexComm. Fancy TeX frontend for Alpha.
• Flashmode. Have the dvi or pdf refreshed continuously while you type in the TeX source window. Very fast implementation.
• Maple, Maxima, and Coq modes for Alpha.
• Check-as-you-type spellchecker.
• iTunes controller. Control iTunes from within Alpha.
• CardBrowser. Interface to data structures that can reasonably be represented as a collection of cards. Typically a simple database like an addressbook.
